Capitalising on the growing Chinese economy and the potential investment opportunities for Victoria will be central to Premier John Brumby’s 11 day trade mission in Asia.
Mr Brumby said China was Victoria’s biggest trading partner generating trade worth $11.5billion in 2006-07 and it was crucial Victorian companies continued to strengthen their presence there.
“Trade missions such as this one will ensure that Victoria is in a competitive position to open up new export opportunities and continue to attract significant investments from overseas companies in the future,” Mr Brumby said.
“In the highly competitive global economy we now live in it is vital that Victoria and Victorian companies are represented on the world stage.”
Mr Brumby will visit Beijing, Nanjing and Shanghai and hold high level meetings with Ministers in the Chinese Government including the Minister for Water Resources Chen Lei, and the Vice-Minister of Construction Huang Wei.
Mr Brumby will also lead The Environment & Sustainable Development Mission which includes over 30 Victorian companies seeking to capitalise on China’s multi-billion sustainable development market.
“Victorian companies are world leaders in sustainable development and water conservation and there is a growing market in China for these companies to tap into,” he said.
Mr Brumby will also visit Victoria’s sister state in China, Jiangsu Province, and attend a number of conferences including opening the Environmental Protection & Sustainable Development Forum and addressing the China Australian Chamber of Commerce.
Victoria is the most widely represented Australian State in China, with Government Business Offices in the cities of Nanjing and Shanghai, as well as Hong Kong.
